COMPOSITION:  Each chewable tablet contains:

Carprofen 75 mg
Excipients q.s.

DESCRIPTION: This is the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) of the propionic acid class which is having the ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen. Carprofen is a substituted for carbazole & the nonproprietary designation.

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

PHARMACODYNAMICS: Is a member of the 2-aryl propionic acid group of NSAIDs, which possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activity. Carprofen is a chiral drug. Like many other NSAIDs is an inhibitor of the enzyme cyclooxygenase of the arachidonic acid cascade. The inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by carprofen is slight in relation to its anti-inflammatory, analgesic potency. The accurate mode of action of carprofen is not clear.

PHARMACOKINETICS: The rapidly & nearly completely absorbed with more than 90% bioavailable, when administered orally. Highest blood concentrations of plasma are achieved in the 1-3 hours after oral administration of 1, 5, and 25 mg/kg for dogs. The mean terminal half-life of carprofen is approximately 8 hours which range's 4.5-9.8 hours. Has a small volume of distribution with a low systemic clearance. Highly bound to plasma protein.

The metabolized in the liver by conjunction and oxidation. The excretion of the glucuronide conjugate is mainly fecal after biliary excretion.


DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: For oral administration to dogs. The 1st dose of 2 - 4 mg carprofen per kg body weight/day in two equally divided doses. After seven days, the dose may be reduced to 2 mg per kg body weight per day as single daily dose subject to clinical response. Long-term treatment had to be under veterinarian’s supervision.

To be administered with food.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  1. Not to use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients.
  2. Not to use in dogs suffering from cardiac, hepatic or renal diseases.
  3. Not to exceed the recommended dose.

WARNINGS:

  • Dogs should undergo a thorough history and physical examination before initiation of NSAIDs therapy.
  • During the administration of any NSAID, proper laboratory tests are to be established with blood tests and serum biochemical baseline data prior and periodically during, to be considered.
  • Owners should be advised to observe for signs of potential drug toxicity.
  • In case of ingestion by humans, Consult a physician 

For oral use in dogs only. Do not use in cats.

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Not recommended to use in dogs with bleeding disorders, where safety has not been established in dogs with these disorders.
  • Safe to use for animals less than 6 weeks of age, pregnant dogs, dogs used for breeding purposes, or in lactating bitches is not been established.
  • Alternative analgesia should be considered if additional pain medication is warranted after administration of the total daily dose of carprofen.
  • Use of another NSAIDs is not recommended.
  • Consider the appropriate washout times when switching from one NSAIDs to another or when switching from corticosteroid use to NSAIDs use.
  • Due to the good meat taste nature of chewable tablets, store out of dogs in a secured location.
  • In case of ingestion in large quantities, adverse reactions have been reported.
  • If you suspect the dog has consumed tablets above the recommended dose, please call your veterinarian for immediate assistance.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:  The safety has not been established in pregnant or lactating animals. Not to use in pregnant or lactating bitches.

ADVERSE REACTIONS: Typical undesirable effects associated with NSAIDs, like vomiting, soft feces/diarrhea, the small amount of blood in fecal, loss of appetite and lethargy have been reported. No clinically significant false reactions have been reported. If the false reaction occurs, the product usage should be stopped and the advice of a vet is considered.

INFORMATION FOR DOG OWNERS: Like other drugs of its class, it is not free from adverse reactions. Owners are to be advised of the potential for adverse reactions & should be informed of the clinical signs associated with drug intolerance.

Adverse reactions may include:

  • Decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dark or tarry stools, increased water consumption, increased urination, and pale gums for anemia, gums in yellow, due to jaundice- the skin or white of the eye may occur, lethargy, incoordination, seizure, or change in behavior.
  • The drug is withdrawn and vet care is initiated with high signs of adverse effects to the patients with drug-related reactions have recovered.
  • Owners are to be advised of the importance of periodic follow up for all dogs during the usage of any NSAIDs.
  • Wash hands after handling the product.

ANIMAL SAFETY: From the studied reports & clinical trials, it is well tolerated in dogs after oral administration
